(S04E13) The final shocking revelation of the season–which wasn’t so shocking, if you heard the rumors–made me want to write off the Weeds season finale as unimaginative. To offer up such a commonplace TV twist, and to do it in the last moments of the episode, was definitely not original.

As season finales go, this episode wasn’t legendary (I’ll never regard that word the same way again, thanks to Doug). However, there were a few scenes that gave us the Weeds we’ve always loved, and I’d like to believe that the show’s distinct, dark humor will have a stronger presence next season.

Let’s start with the major plot twist: Nancy is pregnant. The sonogram came down from on high and saved her life. I’ll admit that I’ve been in denial about this twist since I read the spoilers for the finale. An unexpected pregnancy isn’t the sort of thing that Weeds usually does, and it doesn’t really compare to the destruction of Agrestic last season. There is one positive thing about the pregnancy, though. Nancy and Esteban are still going to be a part of each other’s lives. Hopefully the writers will give the relationship more of a chance to develop. Demian Bichir was a great addition to the cast, and Nancy needs a man in her life. That said, I won’t blame those of you that want to cry foul in the comments.

Celia spent most of the season as a bizarre kind of comic relief, yet somehow ended up in the greatest danger going into the hiatus. The idea that anyone would pay $200,000 for Celia after her parade of insincere apologies is laughable. Does Celia’s fate strike anyone else as supremely unfair? Nancy takes serious risks and breaks the law, and Celia is the one that ends up in jail, injured, and now abducted. Are the writers punishing Celia merely to demonstrate that there are, in fact, consequences in the Weeds universe? I’m certainly not regarding Celia as an innocent victim, but things are definitely off-balance. Both women are below-average parents, and Celia is the only one getting drugged and held for ransom. Silas and Shane love Nancy in spite of her actions.

Things may be taking a turn in the Botwin family, though. Shane is quickly becoming a thief, a drug dealer, and a little jerk. I never thought that I’d respect Silas and dislike Shane after this season was over, but here we are. I’m relieved that someone is learning from Nancy’s mistakes. Silas has the right idea: keep it simple. Grow weed, sell it, and live modestly off the profits. The small farm is the show’s most promising storyline, and I hope the writers do something fantastic with it. Will Nancy join Andy, Silas, and Shane on the farm, or will she be with Esteban? Will Andy summon the courage to deal with his feelings for Nancy? Their candid conversation during Nancy’s bath may be the closest that Andy gets to intimacy with his former sister-in-law.

My favorite moment of the episode came from Doug. The autoerotic asphyxiation scene was not only a hilarious surprise, but was also a clever parody of The Shawshank Redemption (see the video for yourself). I’m curious to see what happens to Doug in season five. I love Kevin Nealon, but this was a perfect way to say goodbye to his character. I wouldn’t mind if this was it for Doug Wilson, although I doubt that he’s leaving the Botwins anytime soon. Why couldn’t the episode have ended with that scene, instead of with the pregnancy twist? Even the tense, tearful scene in the Prius (didn’t that just break your heart?) would have been a better ending.

All in all, the finale gave me just enough hope and humor to hold my interest. Mary-Louise Parker continues to deliver amazing performances as Nancy Botwin. If not for her, the show would have lost me.

Hunter Parrish, who was raised in the conservative Texas town of Plano, has played a pot dealer on TV and now has sex on stage. Well, not quite: It’s simulated.

But the scene is one of the most talked about in the Tony Award-winning rock musical “Spring Awakening.”

“It’s weird to, like, fake sex and put your parts up against someone else’s,” the 21-year-old actor says. “But I figured, ‘You know what? I’m going to be naked every night in New York, I might as well get used to it.’”

His role in “Spring Awakening” certainly isn’t the first time Parrish has bared his bottom. In the acclaimed Showtime series “Weeds,” Parrish not only deals drugs and smokes, but also steals and drops trou as Mary-Louise Parker’s oldest son. In real life, though, he’s never inhaled.

“I know that if I ever smoked pot I would probably become, like, a total pothead because I think I would like that,” he says. “I have, like, a chill personality, so that’s why I’m never going to start, because I don’t like to be dependent on anything. I don’t even drink coffee.”

Never say never — to coffee, at least. Taking the stage eight days a week might wear him down. He could find himself addicted to a good French roast, like any other sleep-deprived Broadway actor in need of a caffeine fix.

Parrish stifles a yawn during an interview with The Associated Press at a tapas restaurant in downtown Manhattan. It comes out of nowhere, though, since the rest of the time he’s a verbal dynamo, leaping animatedly into such eclectic topics as his celebrity crush (actress Amanda Seyfried), aversion to organized religion (he says it’s too hypocritical) and decision to wear a black rocker T-shirt instead of a “pretty-boy sweater” to lunch.

The night before, he had officially stepped into his role as rebellious schoolboy Melchior Gabor in “Spring Awakening,” an adaptation of Frank Wedekind’s classic German drama about sexually repressed teens.

It’s a career-defining move for Parrish, a loving son and liberal Christian, who has a surprisingly potent set of pipes. Again, he’s playing against his wholesome upbringing.

In a recent episode of “Weeds,” now in its fourth season, Parrish stripped down for a graphic sex scene with actress Julie Bowen. It can be viewed on YouTube (warning: not suitable for work), and further separates him from the Zac Efrons of the world whose handlers veto material that could possibly alienate the parents of the core tween audience.

Parrish and Efron, the 20-year-old “High School Musical” heartthrob, co-star in the upcoming comedy “Seventeen Again,” about a middle-age guy who wishes he were 17 again. Parrish, whose film credits include “Freedom Writers,” “RV” and “Premonition,” might have landed Efron’s role in the hugely successful “HSM” franchise, but he skipped his final audition to do a movie instead.

“I would have a very different career right now, and I’m happy where I’m at,” he says, grinning widely.

What Parrish is likely too diplomatic to acknowledge is that he has more creative freedom than his Disney Channel peers, and unlike Efron, Miley Cyrus (”Hannah Montana”) and the Jonas Brothers (who toured with Cyrus), he has no squeaky-clean, multimillion-dollar image to maintain.

Parrish possesses undeniable stage presence, and his angelic features — turquoise-colored eyes, high cheekbones, shaggy blond hair, choirboy smile — pop under bright lights. His singing voice is a rich tenor, gliding easily into falsetto in the ballad “Left Behind.”

Producers sneaked him on stage — unofficially — several days ahead of his debut, however, and Parrish was more than a little nervous.

“I was petrified! It was petrifying,” he says, but by the second performance, he adds, “I was like, ‘All right man, I’m ready!’ I was eager. That was great, because I just sort of was fueled, you know?”

Parrish says Parker, his TV mom, sat in the audience Aug. 18 and ended up in tears.

“She came up to my dressing room and she was crying and she was like, ‘I’m so proud of you. I can’t believe that you’re doing this. This is Broadway. You belong here,’” he recalls.

It was Parker, a Tony winner in 2001 for the play “Proof,” who persuaded him to do theater during his hiatus from shooting “Weeds.” Parish, who had been in local theater productions in the Dallas area before heading to Hollywood, missed the stage. He flew out to New York last year to talk about a role in the musical “Hairspray.” But in a lucky break, he also connected with “Spring Awakening” while the show was recasting its original Melchior, the multitalented Jonathan Groff.

It was love at first sight for the show’s producer Tom Hulce.

“I don’t get Showtime, so I don’t have any great reference for him, and so when he came in to see us last November, we couldn’t believe that there was this guy who was so charismatic and such a good actor, and then when he opened his mouth and sang for us, all the little hairs on our arms stood up,” Hulce gushes. “I feel like we just had a very fortuitous moment … just the right person, the right time, the right part.”

Parrish’s run extends at least through February. He leads an ensemble cast that includes Alexandra Socha (as sweet, curious Wendla) and Gerard Canonico (as the tormented Moritz).

“He has a very empathetic spirit, and it allows him to climb into the character from the inside-out, and in a kind of complete and authentic way. … He’s so big-hearted as a person that he can stand at the center of the story and the audience wants to climb in with him. And that’s such a gift,” Hulce says.

Parrish began singing in church as a boy, and is now working on his debut album, which he describes as fitting into the “rock-acoustic-chill-coffeehouse” genre.

But he geeks out over portraying Melchior, a freethinking atheist who rebels against the buttoned-up society of provincial 1890s Germany.

“I feel like we would be good friends,” says Parrish, who relates to Melchior’s strong moral center and progressive-minded parents, if not the character’s atheism.

He says he loved growing up in Plano, “but they definitely put you in a box, and my parents were very lenient and very open-minded and let me explore for myself what I felt was right and wrong. And they raised all their kids that way, and none of us have problems with alcohol or drugs.”

Parrish has an older brother and sister, both in their 20s, and the siblings are “all very centered, grounded people,” he says.

But you wouldn’t be able to tell that by Parrish’s portrayal on “Weeds” of Silas Botwin, who insinuates himself into his mother’s suburban drug operation.

“Silas is totally opposite of me, and also not as smart as Melchior,” Parrish says. “So Silas is like the stupid version of not being me, and Melchior is like the smart, intellectual version of not being me. … But I like doing that. I like being able to play roles that are totally different from me.”

And Parrish hopes to be acting for the rest of his life: “I like people and I like characters and I like jumping out of myself.”

The stress of having both a deflowered son and knowledge of the tunnel’s other uses took its toll on Nancy. Harsh reality set in for the others as well. Doug’s faults weren’t lost on Maria, Celia’s lack of insurance affected her recovery, and Bob Odenkirk made me lose confidence in commercial airline pilots. Where’s Jimmy Jam when you need him?

Trust issues aside, Nancy has learned a thing or two from Esteban. I was glad that she spanked Shane for flaunting his sex life (gag, by the way) by bringing the goth girls to the kitchen in the morning. It’s not much, but it’s a start. She also took his advice–making up for one’s crimes with positive acts–to heart, and took the idea more seriously than Esteban did. Black-tie charity functions and mobile medical units don’t cancel out human trafficking and gun-running. Esteban’s making more of an effort than the average drug kingpin, but it’s a half-assed effort nonetheless. Nancy, on the other hand, will try to save Guillermo’s “cousins” by snitching to Till. Again, it’s a promising start.

The rehab scenes gave us the kind of Celia moments that we should have been getting all season. A bloody-nosed Celia offering herself to Mexican tunnel guards? No. A mid-detox Celia mixing it up with Bob Odenkirk? Yes. Celia getting a prison makeover against her will? Disturbing. Celia in group therapy with the dregs of society? Perfection. That crack addict had her hair in a side ponytail, for heaven’s sake. Side ponytails are always funny, no matter what the context.

The rest of the Botwin gang dealt with the consequences of their poor relationship decisions. Shane is in over his head with Harmony and Simone. His only options of escape are if Isabelle destroys them or if the family leaves Ren Mar. I’m willing to forgive the painfully obvious Andy-Doug-Mermex love triangle if it ends in some sort of hilarious fight between the two guys. Did anyone else think of Arrested Development when Maria realized that Doug wasn’t boyfriend material? Although they were never spoken, I could almost hear the words “I’ve made a huge mistake.” I can’t imagine any scenario that would redeem Silas’ pot sandwich storyline. Perhaps Nancy can feed Till some bogus evidence linking Guillermo to Lisa, resulting in Lisa’s imprisonment and death at the hands of Celia’s former cellmate, Chita.

With only two episodes remaining, it’s time to be realistic about what we can expect from the show this season. I’m not convinced that Ren Mar is an ideal permanent home for the Botwins. With the exception of Davenport and Marzipan (now long gone), the Ren Mar characters have not won me over. Would anyone be disappointed if the Botwins packed up and moved again? The writers moved the core characters once; they can move them again. What do you say, Weeds fans? Is it time to move on, or would you stick around for another Ren Mar season?
Ever since Nancy left Agrestic and started over, she’s been re-examining her life and coming to terms with her personal failures. The big question is: Will she ever truly change her behavior?

Her self-awareness has yielded some positive results, like her dinner table apology and her throwdown with Lisa, but we’ve yet to see any significant changes. Will this week’s discovery make a difference?

“No more hiding.” Nancy’s ayahuasca trip brought about the latest realization. The carefree days of bringing pot to the bored, suburban masses are over. She’s part of an organization that is far more dangerous than she first thought. Nancy was able to justify drug dealing during season two’s tomato talk with Shane, but human trafficking is another matter. It’s harder for Nancy to delude herself when the victims are looking into her eyes. That young girl with the butterfly bag will haunt her thoughts for quite a while. No more lies; people are being hurt, and it’s time for Nancy to accept her share of the responsibility.

Did Esteban help Nancy make this breakthrough, or is he part of the problem that she mentioned on the beach? She had a serious look on her face when Esteban asked if he’d made everything better. I doubt that Nancy will ever let another man take care of her and protect her the same way that Judah did. She wasn’t equipped to be the head of the household when he died, and she’s struggled with her role as a single mom. There’s no way that she’d set herself up for that kind of a loss again. Nancy knows that she has to maintain control of her own life and family, whether Esteban’s in the picture or not.

The Botwin boys had their own relationship challenges to deal with. Shane spent the night with his two groupies from last week, and may or may not have had sex with them. This show never holds back when it comes to mature content, so it’s extremely likely that Shane went through with it. For the record, I hope he didn’t. Shane is the last kid that I’d describe as innocent, but he should get to keep this last shred of childhood a bit longer. Silas went from dumped to doormat pretty fast. He’s basically a nanny who accepts sex as payment instead of cash and refrigerator privileges. I’m so over Lisa and the whole MILF storyline. This relationship needs to end, or at least become funnier. Rad and his babysitter are definitely not the next great comedy duo.

Speaking of humor, Celia made me laugh for the first time in several episodes. I knew that she had that fork-wielding tirade in her. Isabelle spelled out the problems with Celia, both as a person and a character. She used to be mean-spirited and judgmental, the kind of woman who hid laxatives in her daughter’s candy stash. Everyone wants that Celia back, and the show needs her back. The intervention was this episode’s only funny moment, and it needed more. Here’s hoping that Doug’s budding relationship with Mermex can get things back on track.

Greetings, Weeds wackers, and welcome to season 4. I will be your hostess on this likely turbulent flight from fictional Agrestic, in the L.A. suburbs, to Ren Mar, just outside San Diego, where the Botwin clan, sans hangers-on, will set up house (and shop) for another somewhat nonsensical venture. Why was I chosen to be your TV Watch guide this time around, you ask? Well, I do happen to have an unusual credential — namely, my book, Pot Culture: The A-Z Guide to Stoner Language and Life, which came out in April and was partly inspired by the success of the show. I tell you this not to see the book’s ranking inch up on Amazon (though that’s always nice), but in the interest of full disclosure: Weeds was high on Pot Culture’s list of ”Must-see Stoner TV” shows because I genuinely love the series. And even when the story line has been a bit lacking or veered off course (Andy’s Army stint), or when the production tried to cash in on some casting cache (ahem, Mary-Kate Olsen), I continue to be wowed by the mere fact that it’s on television.

Anyway, the point of this diatribe: I try not to be overly critical, but to provide more of a pointed recap (along with behind-the-scenes tidbits and a pot fact here and there) in my TV Watches, leaving it to you, faithful viewers (and hopefully readers), to duke it out. So let’s stay focused, have an intelligent debate, and appreciate the fact that, even for cable, Weeds has broken many old-guard Hollywood rules and helped bring TV up to date with permissive culture. And it has done so under a conservative government, which is certainly something to cheer for. With that in mind, Weeds creator Jenji Kohan promises that season 4 will be ultrapolitical, and so the journey south to the U.S.-Mexico border begins…

Someone’s passing gas in the car and it ain’t Andy, Shane, or Silas. Just another day for the Botwins, where three-quarters of the family members are, as usual, unknowing accessories to a crime perpetrated by unlikely ringleader Nancy. And not just unlikely, but unqualified, as she’s proven time and time again. But this infraction — arson on top of the grow operation and distribution network, not to mention the dead DEA-agent husband — is a new career high for Nancy. Getting out of it, or around it, will require some serious craftiness.

So what does Nancy have up her sleeve? A trip to Grandma Bubbie’s. Because in times of possible incarceration, who else do you turn to but family? Only problem is, it’s not Nancy’s family, it’s Judah’s, and said Bubbie is not all that fond of her granddaughter-in-law. ”She just hates that I’m not Jewish,” Nancy explains to the boys before coming clean about setting the house on fire. But after that admission, somehow interfaith marriage doesn’t seem like such a big deal anymore. So the plan, in no uncertain terms: Get in the car and move on.

Meanwhile, back in Magrestic: Celia is discovering karma as the hand of the law comes down on her big time. It is, after all, a sexy triumph for a cop: nabbing the ”Drugs Are Wrong” lady who’d even posed with Sasquatch. But why, with all of Celia’s smarts, why would she ever consent to being interrogated without a lawyer present? Has she totally lost it by this point? If not, the diet Shasta in a can at room temperature without a straw will certainly send her over the edge.

This is all of no immediate interest to Nancy, it seems, who’s blissfully daydreaming of a new life by the beach (factoid: the new city is named after the Hollywood studio where Weeds production is based), but what of Bubbie? Turns out great-grams is in a coma, strapped to life-support machines that have taken over the living room. The Botwins figure this out after breaking into the joint — do they know no boundaries? Ever the sleuth, Andy also finds evidence of his estranged, gambling-addicted dad, Len (Albert Brooks), and suddenly life by the ocean starts to look a little bleak.

We have at least three more episodes featuring Albert Brooks (now there’s good casting), so we’ll soon dig deeper into the issues between Len and the rest of the clan. The father-son dynamic is clearly tempestuous, but not nearly as transparent as the scorn for Nancy, or as Len likes to call her, ”Not Francie,” a reference to an ex of Judah’s, who, we can only assume, was Jewish (and not because she’s an eye doctor, necessarily). Then again, the German-delicacy/gas-smell combo (and funniest line of the night) wasn’t exactly working in her favor. But at the heart of the Ren-Mar home is the late Judah, beloved and held above all others, who we’ll hopefully get to know a little bit better, even if it is posthumously (a flashback or two wouldn’t hurt).

Len comes through and allows Nancy and crew to stay, opening up himself and poor Bubbie to a host of potential entanglements, both legal and otherwise. But at least Nancy has the decency to acknowledge that they’re on the run and avoiding a paper trail. Len assumes Andy’s the culprit, while Shane and Silas brace for Act 3 of the thug life.

Back to police headquarters, where Doug and Dean are closing the door on Celia’s freedom without a hint of remorse. As for Sanjay, the prospect of jail leaves one lingering thought: ”I’m gonna get raped and it’s gonna make me hate being gay!” But most shocking is that even little Isabelle is in on the conspiracy to nail her mom for the grow op. Indeed, Celia’s prospects are looking grim with no amount of between-the-glass flirting getting her out of this jam.

Which leaves us with Guillermo, Nancy’s new main man, at least in business (anyone wanna bet on whether she’ll end up boning him?), who has some grandiose plans of his own. Nancy’s responsibilities, however, are fairly straightforward. Look pretty for the border guards while you smuggle massive amounts of drugs inside the country. But no heroin, Nancy insists, prompting Guillermo to make perhaps the most incisive remark of the episode: ”You got some arbitrary rules you live by.”

Where do we go from here? Gangster-territory, where moving mota (Mexican term for marijuana and the name of an Offspring song — see page 97 of Pot Culture) is a source of livelihood for many a drug peddler (and the path to early retirement for a small few). Does Nancy have what it takes to bro-down with Guillermo and gang? Or will she soon crash and burn — again?

(S04E09) It appears that Nancy is growing up, and it only took four seasons for it to happen. She dealt with mature relationship issues and had a calm, romantic moment with Esteban. I was thrilled that she finally made good on her promise to be more available to her family, going MILF-a-MILF with Lisa and dealing with Shane’s kinky flea-scratching. Her responsible behavior also made up for Celia’s descent into coke-fiendom.

Let’s begin with the best moment of the episode: Nancy’s frank discussion with Lisa and Silas. It was a feminine version of last week’s brutal goat slaughter. All of the Lisa-haters must have loved watching her squirm like some inept soap opera schemer who’s been caught in the act. Ultimately it was Silas, not Nancy, who sabotaged the partnership. What is it with Silas? He always wants women more than they want him–Quinn, Megan, Tara, and now Lisa. Perhaps it’s the curse of the dopey hot guy.

Shane is having better luck with the ladies now that he’s the toast of junior high. I didn’t know that mysterious bullies could have groupies and be at the center of class rumors. Then again, it’s been a while since I was that age. He’d better not abandon his BFF, Isabelle, now that he’s the big man on campus. I was disappointed that Nancy’s heart-to-heart with her son was more of a lecture than a conversation. Shane’s old enough to give someone a prison-style beating, which means that he’s too old to hide under a blanket when things get awkward.

I’m still unhappy with Celia’s drastic personality change, but it looks like Ms. Hodes will reclaim her wit and sharp tongue very soon. Thank goodness, because I totally reached my limit after the second bloody sneeze. Was anyone else ready to give up on Celia for the rest of the season? Back in Agrestic she was a magnificent beyotch. In Ren Mar, she’s been a blubbering, toothless drug addict. I’m ready for Celia to get her spirit back. The same goes for our sad buddy, Doug. No one should compare themselves to Andrew Ridgeley; it’s too depressing.

After last week’s hook-up, most of you predicted that Esteban would be a danger to Nancy. Now it seems that Cesar regards “reckless” Nancy as the liability in the relationship. I’m officially adopting Cesar as the show’s new Heylia. He’s wise, funny, and capable of sizing up his colleagues’ weaknesses. To be fair, the couple’s quiet moment at Ren Mar was surprisingly sweet. I didn’t realize that the relationship had progressed beyond spankings and scratch marks. Is this as close to normal as Nancy can get?

My favorite lines of the night:

“Cesar is Alfred.” Esteban, on his status as Tijuana’s Batman.

“Rad’s gonna be 17…sooner than you think.” Nancy, laying the smack down on Lisa

“I can be back later with Cheetos and malt balls if you want to get high and listen to my cry tape.” Doug

Next week–the gang has an intervention for Celia, Maria Mermex reconnects with Doug, and Nancy takes some “unconventional medicine.”
